Two steps forward, one step back

    Wednesday, April 4, 2007, 12:00 AM [General]

I finally hooped my farthingale. A couple of adjustments need to be made to hoop sizes. No biggie. In fact, I've got one done already, since it involved tightening one hoop up. The other adjustment, unfortunately, means cutting a new length of steel... so I'm procrastinating.

This time, however, procrastination served me well. I decided to check to see how things were fitting... my petticoat came up short. Severely short. Margaret had the great idea, before I started plans to mess with the petticoat, of checking the farthingale against my forepart as well. Turns out the farthingale is a few inches too long. So part of tonight was spent in ripping seams.

My plan is to take 2 inches off the top, and repleat into the waistband. I might have to remove the top hoop, I might not. Either way should be fine. I think the petticoat will still come up a tad short, but not as bad as before. If it's still short, I'll add a small guard or something to the bottom.

Where this becomes an issue is that I was going to make my forepart base the same way I made the petticoat. I don't want that coming up short. So I'll see how the petticoat works out, and I'll measure the forepart base before I take scissors and machine to it. If need be, I could always go get another cut of brown, after taking a measuring tape to the store with me to double check that the selvage-to-selvage actually equals what's written on the end of the bolt.

I did more than that, today, but it's way past bedtime. I'll fill in gaps, later.

    Bumroll

    Monday, April 2, 2007, 11:23 PM [General]

Not a tonne of work done on outfitting today.  So, of course, this is the day where I took the most pictures.  ::shrug::

I worked on my bumroll.  The first step, of course, was drafting it out.  Handily enough, there was fabric left from the farthingale project, and Margaret has a pattern that she lent me.

Rather than working with the multi yards that were there, I opted for some fabric waste and cut useable rectangles.

I'd briefly considered pinning the pieces together, or somehow nesting one in the other lined up on the fold, but realised that I was really setting myself up for heartache.  So I opted to just sketch the pattern onto each piece and let any flubs disappear in the sewing.

The ended up about the same size/shape.  The photo doesn't look that way, due to the top piece teepeeing on the fold, and the foreshortening of the picture.  Oh, well.

Next was stitching them together.  I realised that, using the standard 5/8" seam allowance, I was going to end up with a slightly smaller bumroll than I wanted.  So I worked at slightly less than 1/2".  Not much of a difference, but it made me feel better. :)

Then I snipped the corners, and clipped along the seam allowance, for a prettier seam once I turned it right side out.

    Finally, right side out.

I'd planned to get the entire thing completed, including waistband and grommets, tonight.  Unfortunately, I got stalled out because I couldn't find my polyfill.  I was so very close to just stuffing it with aspen shavings.

    Oh, well.  Walmart trip tomorrow.
